Search for Cenforce and you will find dozens of websites offering blister packs of blue tablets at a fraction of what you might expect to pay for an erectile dysfunction medicine. The tablets contain sildenafil, the same active ingredient as Viagra, so it is easy to assume they are simply a cheaper generic. They are not. Cenforce is not licensed for sale in the UK, the sellers are not regulated pharmacies, and the doses on offer go well beyond anything a UK prescriber would issue. This guide explains what Cenforce is, why the UK regulator has never approved it, and how to get the same medicine safely.

What Cenforce is

Cenforce is a brand name used by Centurion Laboratories, a manufacturer based in Gujarat, India. The range is sold as sildenafil citrate tablets in strengths from 25 mg up to 200 mg, alongside variants such as Cenforce Professional (a sublingual tablet), Cenforce Soft (chewable), Cenforce D (sildenafil combined with dapoxetine) and Cenforce FM, which is marketed to women despite sildenafil having no UK licence for that use.

In India some of these products are legitimately registered with the national regulator. That registration does not extend to the UK. For a medicine to be sold here it needs a marketing authorisation from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which means the manufacturing site has been inspected, the formulation has been assessed, and the product information has been approved. Cenforce has none of this. In regulatory terms it is an unlicensed, imported prescription medicine being sold directly to the public.

Sildenafil is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. The one exception is Viagra Connect, a 50 mg sildenafil tablet reclassified in 2018 so that pharmacists can supply it after a short consultation. Every other sildenafil product, including licensed generic sildenafil, needs a prescription from a registered prescriber.

That means a website shipping Cenforce to a UK address without a prescription is breaking the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 twice over: it is supplying a prescription-only medicine without a prescription, and it is supplying a product that has no UK authorisation at all. The MHRA regularly seizes these products and takes down the sites selling them. The legal risk falls mostly on the seller, but the clinical risk falls entirely on you, and a product bought from a lawbreaking seller comes with no recourse if something goes wrong.

Cenforce 100, 150 and 200: the dose problem

The most searched versions are Cenforce 100, Cenforce 150 and Cenforce 200. The number is the sildenafil content in milligrams, and it is where the marketing diverges sharply from the medicine.

In the UK, sildenafil is licensed at 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. The usual starting dose is 50 mg, adjusted down to 25 mg or up to 100 mg depending on response and tolerability, and the maximum is one dose of 100 mg in any 24-hour period. There is no licensed 150 mg or 200 mg tablet anywhere in the UK or the EU, and there never has been. The original clinical trials found that doses above 100 mg added little to effectiveness while increasing side effects such as headache, flushing, visual disturbance and low blood pressure.

Sites selling Cenforce present 150 mg and 200 mg as "extra strength" options for men who found 100 mg disappointing. Clinically, a poor response to 100 mg is a reason to review timing, food, alcohol, underlying causes or a switch to a different medicine such as tadalafil, not a reason to double the dose of a drug that is already at its ceiling. Our guide to sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil explains how those options differ.

What is actually in the tablets?

With a licensed medicine you know the answer, because the factory is inspected and every batch is tested against an approved specification. With Cenforce bought online you do not. The tablet might be a genuine Centurion product, a copy made elsewhere and packaged to look like one, or something else entirely.

The MHRA's testing of seized erectile dysfunction medicines has found tablets containing far more or far less sildenafil than the label states, tablets containing a different active ingredient altogether, and tablets bulked out with substances that have no place in a medicine, including talc, commercial paint and printer ink. Because the supply chain is invisible to you, there is no way to tell a genuine blister pack from a counterfeit one, and no manufacturer you can hold to account.

The health risks nobody checks for

Sildenafil is a safe medicine for most men when it is prescribed properly. The consultation is not a formality: it exists because a short list of situations turn a routine medicine into a dangerous one.

  • Nitrates. GTN sprays, isosorbide mononitrate and similar heart medicines must never be combined with sildenafil. The combination can cause a sudden, severe drop in blood pressure. Recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrite) carry the same risk.
  • Riociguat and some alpha blockers. Riociguat is an absolute contraindication, and alpha blockers used for prostate symptoms or blood pressure need dose spacing and a lower sildenafil dose.
  • Recent heart attack or stroke, unstable angina, severe heart failure or very low blood pressure. Sexual activity itself is a cardiac workload, and sildenafil is not advised in these situations until a clinician has assessed you.
  • Eye conditions. Men with a history of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy or certain inherited retinal conditions are usually advised against PDE5 inhibitors.
  • Liver or kidney impairment and some HIV, antifungal and antibiotic medicines. These raise sildenafil levels in the blood and usually mean a lower dose.

A prescriber asks about all of this in a few minutes. A Cenforce website asks for your card number. The man most likely to be harmed by an unchecked 200 mg tablet is exactly the man a consultation would have flagged: older, on heart medication, and reaching for a higher dose because the first one did not seem to work.

Erectile dysfunction is also frequently the first visible sign of cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Treating the symptom with an imported tablet and skipping the assessment means missing the chance to catch the cause. Our article on understanding erectile dysfunction covers what a proper assessment looks for.

Licensed sildenafil: the same medicine, done properly

The frustrating thing about the Cenforce trade is that it solves a problem that no longer exists. When Viagra was under patent, a month's supply was expensive and unlicensed imports were the cheap alternative. The patent expired in the UK in 2013, and licensed generic sildenafil is now one of the least expensive prescription medicines a pharmacy dispenses. Sildenafil tablets from Farmeci are MHRA-licensed, dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy, and supplied after an online consultation reviewed by a UK prescriber, with 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg strengths available where appropriate.

The practical differences matter. You get a product from an inspected supply chain. You get the dose that suits you rather than the one that sells. You get a prescriber who has checked your medicines and history, and a pharmacist you can contact if you have side effects or questions. And if sildenafil does not suit you, you get advice on alternatives rather than a bigger tablet. If you prefer not to have a consultation at all, Viagra Connect 50 mg from a pharmacy is the only legal route to sildenafil without a prescription in the UK, which we cover in this guide to over-the-counter Viagra.

How to spot an unregulated seller

A few checks separate a legitimate UK online pharmacy from a site reselling imported stock.

  • Every UK online pharmacy must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. The registration number and the superintendent pharmacist's name should be easy to find, and you can check them on the GPhC register.
  • Prescription medicines are only supplied after a consultation. A site that lets you add a prescription-only medicine straight to a basket is not operating legally.
  • Licensed UK sildenafil comes in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. Any site offering 120 mg, 150 mg or 200 mg tablets is selling unlicensed product.
  • Look at the brand names. Cenforce, Kamagra, Vidalista, Fildena, Suhagra and similar names are all unlicensed imports.
  • Prices far below the UK market, bulk discounts, and shipping from outside the UK are all warning signs.

If you have already taken Cenforce and feel unwell, particularly with chest pain, a prolonged erection lasting more than four hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or fainting, seek urgent medical help and tell the clinician exactly what you took. If you have been using it without problems, the sensible next step is a proper consultation so that you can switch to a licensed supply with a known dose. A clinician on the Farmeci erectile dysfunction service can review your history and discuss which licensed option is appropriate.
