"Copper peptide" turns up constantly in skincare reviews, haircare marketing and, increasingly, in peptide forums discussing injectable "research chemicals". The name GHK-Cu covers all of it, but the products behind that name are not equivalent, and the evidence supporting each of them is not equivalent either. This guide separates what is a well-established cosmetic ingredient from what is an unregulated injectable, and looks honestly at what the research on both actually supports.

What GHK-Cu actually is

GHK-Cu is a small molecule made of three amino acids, glycine, histidine and lysine, tightly bound to a copper ion. It occurs naturally in human plasma and saliva, and its levels appear to fall as people get older. That natural role in tissue repair is what led researchers, from the 1970s onwards, to study GHK-Cu in wound healing and skin ageing, and later in haircare formulations.

In everyday use, "copper peptide" almost always means a topical product: a serum, cream or scalp treatment applied to the skin. Separately, GHK-Cu is sold online in freeze-dried vial form, marketed for injection or "research use only". These are two different products with two different risk profiles, and confusing them is where most of the concern lies.

Topical cosmetic use vs injectable "research" peptides

Topical GHK-Cu products are widely and legally available in the UK. They are regulated as cosmetics, not medicines, so they do not need MHRA licensing in the way a prescription treatment does, but they also are not required to demonstrate the same standard of clinical evidence. A cosmetic copper peptide serum applied to the face or scalp has a low, well-understood safety profile, similar to other leave-on skincare actives.

Injectable GHK-Cu is a different matter entirely. Vials sold as "research peptides" are not licensed medicines in the UK and are not quality-assured in the way a pharmacy medicine is. There is no legitimate UK prescribing pathway for injectable GHK-Cu for skin or hair. Buying it from an unregulated seller means unverified contents, a real risk of contamination, and no clinical oversight if something goes wrong. It is worth being clear about why the two routes exist side by side. A cosmetic serum sits below a certain threshold of biological effect and is assessed on general product safety, not on proof that it treats a medical condition. An injectable product that claims to change hair growth or skin structure at a deeper level would, if it were ever formally assessed, be judged as a medicine, and none of the online sellers of injectable GHK-Cu have gone through that process. The "research use only" label some vials carry is a way of sidestepping that assessment, not evidence that the product is safe to inject.

What the evidence shows for skin

The main published evidence for topical GHK-Cu concerns general skin ageing and wound repair rather than hair specifically. Laboratory and small human studies suggest it may support collagen and elastin production, and it has been studied for its role in calming inflamed or healing skin. Several small clinical trials, some funded by the companies selling the products, report improvements in fine lines, skin firmness and overall skin quality after weeks of regular topical use.

The honest caveat is that this evidence base is smaller and less consistent than for well-established actives such as retinoids or vitamin C. Many of the more striking claims circulating online come from peptide-selling websites rather than independently replicated trials. GHK-Cu is a genuinely interesting cosmetic ingredient with a plausible mechanism, not a proven alternative to established skincare, and results vary between individuals.

What the evidence shows for hair

For hair specifically, most of the published research is decades old, involves small numbers of participants, and predates modern trial standards. A handful of controlled studies using topical copper peptide solutions on the scalp reported increases in hair density and follicle size compared with a placebo solution, over several months of use, with a favourable side-effect profile. That is a reasonable starting signal, and one reason copper peptides feature in some over-the-counter scalp products.

What it is not is proof at the level clinicians expect from a first-line hair loss treatment. The trials are small, some predate current statistical standards, and there is no large, independent, peer-reviewed randomised trial comparing topical GHK-Cu against finasteride or minoxidil head to head. A fair summary is promising research interest rather than an established treatment, and injectable GHK-Cu specifically has essentially no clinical trial evidence in hair loss at all, only marketing copy.

Most of the products that build on this research are topical scalp solutions or shampoos combining GHK-Cu with other ingredients, rather than a single isolated peptide. That makes it genuinely hard to say how much of any reported improvement comes from the copper peptide itself, rather than the accompanying formulation, better scalp hygiene, or simply the placebo effect of a new routine over several months. None of that makes the ingredient worthless, but it does mean the claims made for it should be read with some caution, particularly when they come from the seller of the product being described.

What to look for if you try a copper peptide product

If you decide to try a topical copper peptide product as part of a general skincare or haircare routine, a few practical points reduce the chance of disappointment or irritation. Choose a leave-on cosmetic product from a reputable retailer rather than an unlabelled online vial, patch test on a small area first, and give it several weeks of consistent use before judging whether it is doing anything, since hair and skin changes are slow to show. Combining it with, rather than instead of, a licensed treatment for a diagnosed condition is usually the more sensible approach, and a pharmacist can tell you whether it is likely to interact with anything else you are using on the same area.

Licensed alternatives for hair loss

For androgenetic (pattern) hair loss, the treatments with the strongest UK clinical evidence remain finasteride and minoxidil. Finasteride is a prescription-only tablet for men that reduces the hormone linked to pattern hair loss; minoxidil is applied topically, and can also be taken off-label as a low-dose tablet, to support hair growth and slow shedding. Both have been through proper randomised controlled trials, have well-documented side-effect profiles, and are available through a UK-registered clinician after an online consultation.

None of this rules out topical copper peptides as an add-on for people who enjoy the cosmetic routine, used alongside licensed treatment rather than instead of it. What current evidence does rule out is injectable GHK-Cu as any kind of medically supported hair loss treatment: there is no UK licensing pathway for it, no clinical oversight, and no trial evidence to justify the risk of an unregulated injection.
