"Vidalista vs Viagra" is a common search, and the question usually hides a misunderstanding. Men who have seen Vidalista advertised as a cheaper, longer-lasting alternative to Viagra assume it is a generic version of the same tablet. It is not. Vidalista contains a different drug, it is made for a different market, and it has never been licensed for sale in the UK. This article sets out what is actually being compared, where the real differences lie, and how to get the longer-acting option legally and safely.

Vidalista and Viagra are different drugs

Viagra is the original brand of sildenafil, licensed in the UK since 1998 and now also available as inexpensive generic sildenafil. Vidalista is a brand name used by Centurion Laboratories in India for tablets containing tadalafil. Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis, and in the UK it is available as licensed generic tadalafil as well.

So the honest comparison is not Vidalista against Viagra. It is tadalafil against sildenafil, and separately, an unlicensed import against a licensed medicine. Those are two different questions and they have two different answers.

How tadalafil and sildenafil differ

Both drugs are PDE5 inhibitors. They work in the same way, by relaxing the smooth muscle in the penis so that blood flow increases in response to sexual stimulation. Neither causes an erection on its own, and neither affects desire. Where they differ is in how long they last and how they interact with food.

  • Duration. Sildenafil has a half-life of around four hours and is usually effective for four to five hours. Tadalafil has a half-life of about 17.5 hours and can be effective for up to 36 hours, which is why it is sometimes called the weekend tablet.
  • Onset. Both usually start working within 30 to 60 minutes. Sildenafil is slowed noticeably by a heavy or fatty meal; tadalafil is affected much less by food.
  • Daily dosing. Tadalafil is licensed at a low daily dose (2.5 mg or 5 mg) for men who are sexually active more than twice a week or who prefer not to plan. Sildenafil is only licensed for on-demand use.
  • Side effects. Headache, flushing and indigestion occur with both. Visual disturbance and nasal congestion are a little more common with sildenafil; back pain and muscle aches are more characteristic of tadalafil.

Our guide to how long Cialis takes to work covers the timing in more detail. The key point for this article is that every one of these differences belongs to the drug, not the brand. Licensed tadalafil gives you the 36-hour window just as Vidalista claims to.

Vidalista 20, 40, 60 and 80: dose versus licence

Vidalista is marketed in a range of strengths: 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg, plus Vidalista Black 80, Vidalista CT (a chewable) and Super Vidalista, which adds dapoxetine. The numbers are where the brand parts company with medicine.

Licensed tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is 10 mg or 20 mg taken as needed, with a maximum of one dose in 24 hours, or 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. No regulator in the UK, the EU or the United States has ever approved 40 mg, 60 mg or 80 mg tadalafil for this use, because the dose-finding studies showed no useful gain beyond 20 mg and a steady rise in side effects. A Vidalista 80 tablet is four times the maximum licensed dose, taken without any assessment of whether even 10 mg was appropriate.

Is Vidalista safe?

There are three separate problems, and any one of them would be enough to advise against it.

It is unlicensed. The MHRA has not assessed the product or inspected the factory, so there is no UK assurance of what each tablet contains or how consistently it is made. Testing of seized unlicensed erectile dysfunction tablets has repeatedly found under-dosed, over-dosed and contaminated products, and packaging that is indistinguishable from the genuine article.

It is sold without a prescriber check. Tadalafil must not be taken with nitrates or riociguat, needs care with alpha blockers and some antifungal, antibiotic and HIV medicines, and is not advised after a recent heart attack or stroke or in significant liver or kidney disease. A consultation screens for all of these. A website basket does not.

The doses are wrong. Because tadalafil stays in the body for well over a day, an excessive dose is not a short-lived mistake. Low blood pressure, severe back pain and prolonged erections can persist, and a man who takes Vidalista 60 on consecutive days is accumulating the drug.

Sildenafil and tadalafil are both safe for the great majority of men when they are prescribed properly. The brand is not what makes Vidalista unsafe; the absence of a licence, a check and a sensible dose is. Our overview of PDE5 inhibitors explains how these medicines are meant to be used.

Put this way, the comparison answers itself. If you want the longer window that tadalafil offers, licensed tadalafil (Cialis and generic) gives you exactly that, at a dose that has been checked against your health and your other medicines. If you want sildenafil, licensed sildenafil does the same.

Who should not use either drug

Some men should not take any PDE5 inhibitor, and some need a lower dose or closer follow-up. The main groups are men taking nitrate medicines or using poppers, men taking riociguat, men who have had a heart attack or stroke in the last six months, men with unstable angina, severe heart failure or uncontrolled blood pressure, men with certain inherited eye conditions or a previous episode of sudden vision loss, and men with severe liver disease. Alpha blockers, some antifungals and antibiotics, HIV protease inhibitors and grapefruit juice all raise tadalafil levels and need to be taken into account.

None of this is obscure. It is the standard checklist a UK prescriber runs through in a consultation, and it is why the consultation exists. The men at highest risk from an unlicensed 80 mg tadalafil tablet are precisely the men that checklist would have identified.

Getting tadalafil the licensed way

Unlike sildenafil, which has a pharmacy-only 50 mg version in Viagra Connect, tadalafil is prescription-only in every strength in the UK. That does not mean a GP appointment. A GPhC-registered online pharmacy can supply licensed tadalafil after an online consultation reviewed by a UK prescriber, with the dose chosen for you and the option of daily low-dose treatment if that suits your life better. Generic tadalafil has been available in the UK since 2017, so the cost argument for an unlicensed import no longer holds.

If you have been using Vidalista, the sensible step is a consultation rather than another parcel. Tell the clinician what you have been taking and at what dose; it is useful information, not a confession. A clinician on the Farmeci erectile dysfunction service can review your history, discuss whether tadalafil or sildenafil is the better fit, and supply a licensed product with a known dose. If you ever have chest pain, a prolonged erection beyond four hours or sudden loss of vision or hearing after any of these tablets, seek urgent medical help.
