Hair shedding that feels heavier than usual is one of the most common reasons women look for a vitamin or supplement that might help. Search any pharmacy shelf and you will find dozens of "hair growth" formulas promising thicker, fuller hair within weeks. The evidence behind them is much narrower than the marketing suggests: a genuine nutritional deficiency can absolutely drive hair loss, and correcting it can help hair recover, but supplementing when your levels are already normal is unlikely to do anything beyond what a balanced diet already provides.
This article sets out which nutrients are genuinely linked to hair shedding in women, what the evidence actually shows for supplementing, and why testing before you start is the step most people skip.
Nutritional causes of shedding
Hair follicles are metabolically demanding tissue. They are among the fastest-growing cells in the body, and when the body is short of key building blocks, it tends to divert resources away from hair growth toward organs it considers more essential. The result is a pattern called telogen effluvium: a larger-than-usual proportion of follicles shift out of the growth phase and into a resting phase, then shed a few months later. This often shows as diffuse thinning across the whole scalp rather than a bald patch, and it is one of the most common causes of noticeable hair loss in women referred for assessment.
Nutritional causes are only one branch of telogen effluvium. Illness, surgery, significant weight loss, thyroid disturbance, postpartum hormone changes and chronic stress can all trigger the same pattern. That overlap matters, because it means a nutrient deficiency is not the only explanation to consider, and treating a low ferritin level will not help hair that is shedding for an unrelated reason.
Iron and ferritin
Iron deficiency is the nutritional cause with the strongest evidence behind it in women, largely because of menstrual blood loss. Ferritin is the storage form of iron and the marker clinicians usually check, since it reflects the body's iron reserves rather than just circulating levels. Several UK dermatology and primary care sources have linked low ferritin to increased shedding even before iron-deficiency anaemia develops, which is why a ferritin test is often useful even when a full blood count looks otherwise normal.
What counts as "low enough to matter" for hair is debated, and reference ranges vary between laboratories. As a general principle, a ferritin level toward the bottom of the normal range in a woman with unexplained diffuse shedding is worth discussing with a clinician, rather than assumed to be irrelevant just because it falls inside the reference interval. Correcting iron deficiency, where it exists, typically takes several months to show any improvement in shedding, because hair growth itself is slow.
Iron supplementation is not risk-free. Taking iron tablets without a confirmed deficiency can cause constipation and nausea, and in rarer cases, iron overload is a genuine concern, particularly in anyone with a condition affecting iron metabolism. This is one of the clearest examples of why testing first matters more than taking a supplement on the assumption it will help.
Vitamin D, B12 and folate
Vitamin D deficiency is common in the UK, particularly over autumn and winter, and low levels have been associated with several forms of hair loss in observational studies, including telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. The evidence for supplementing improving hair specifically, rather than simply correcting a deficiency that affects general health, is weaker than for iron, but a low vitamin D level found on testing is worth treating regardless, given its broader importance for bone and immune health.
Vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies are less common causes of hair shedding in women who eat a varied diet, but they are more likely in people following a strict vegan diet, those with malabsorption conditions such as coeliac disease, and people taking certain long-term medications that interfere with absorption. Both are involved in cell division, which makes a deficiency biologically plausible as a contributor to a rapidly dividing tissue like hair follicles, though good-quality trial evidence specifically for hair regrowth is limited.
Zinc and biotin are the other two nutrients most often marketed for hair. Genuine zinc deficiency is uncommon in the UK but can contribute to shedding when present, usually alongside other symptoms such as skin changes or poor wound healing. Biotin deficiency is rare outside specific medical conditions, and there is little good evidence that biotin supplementation helps hair growth in someone who is not actually deficient, despite it being one of the most widely sold "hair vitamins" on the market. Taking biotin before a blood test is also worth avoiding: high-dose biotin supplements are known to interfere with some thyroid and hormone assays, which can produce a misleading result at exactly the point you are trying to find a real answer.
When supplements help and when they don't
The pattern across the evidence is consistent: supplementing a nutrient you are genuinely deficient in can support hair recovery over several months, but supplementing a nutrient you already have enough of does not produce extra growth. This is sometimes described as a ceiling effect, and it is the main reason high-dose "hair, skin and nails" formulas rarely outperform a normal diet in people without a diagnosed deficiency.
There is also a safety side to this. Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin A and vitamin E, can build up in the body when taken in excess, and very high vitamin A intake is itself a recognised, if uncommon, cause of hair shedding. Excess selenium has a similar association. Taking a stack of high-dose supplements without a clear reason to believe you are deficient can, for a small proportion of users, do more harm to hair than good.

Testing before supplementing
The single most useful step before buying a hair supplement is a simple blood panel: full blood count, ferritin, thyroid function, and vitamin D, with B12 and folate added if diet or symptoms suggest a reason to check them. This turns "might a deficiency be causing this" into a specific, answerable question, and it avoids months of taking supplements that were never going to make a difference because nothing was actually low.
Timing matters too. Hair sheds in response to whatever was happening in the body two to three months earlier, so a recent stressful illness, a big change in diet, or starting or stopping a medication can all explain a shedding episode that has nothing to do with current nutrient levels. A clinician taking a history alongside the blood results is what turns a set of numbers into a useful explanation, and it is also the point at which other causes of diffuse hair loss, some of which need a different kind of treatment altogether, get properly ruled out.
If shedding continues for more than a few months, is patchy rather than diffuse, or comes with other symptoms such as fatigue, irregular periods or skin changes, that is a reason to see a clinician rather than continue trying supplements on your own. Your clinician will advise based on your individual circumstances and the results of any testing.
A useful rule of thumb: the more specific the evidence, the more confident you can be that a supplement will help. Correcting a confirmed iron or vitamin D deficiency has reasonably solid support for improving hair shedding over three to six months. Taking a general "hair vitamin" with no testing behind it is a much weaker bet, even where individual ingredients look plausible on a label. The most cost-effective route for most women is testing first, treating what is actually low, and reviewing progress with a clinician rather than adding supplement after supplement without a clear reason for each one.
